Tesla to restart battery cell production at Berlin plant with 8 GWh target
Tesla plans to revive battery cell manufacturing at its Grünheide facility near Berlin, aiming for 8 GWh capacity by 2027 to support local EV production and jobs.
Tesla may revive plans to manufacture battery cells at its Grünheide facility near Berlin. According to Berliner Zeitung, the battery production plant could begin operations in 2027, with an initial annual capacity of up to 8 GWh. This marks a significant scaling back from earlier, more ambitious targets of up to 250 GWh, a project that had been sidelined for some time.
This planned capacity would supply batteries for approximately 100,000 to 130,000 electric vehicles. In practice, this means local cell production would only cover part of the facility's needs, since the Brandenburg site can currently produce up to 375,000 vehicles per year. The remainder will likely rely on external suppliers.
Resuming the project appears to be a more pragmatic move. Local battery assembly shortens supply chains and increases Tesla's manufacturing footprint in Europe. The company is considering the 4680 format, a technology that previously faced scaling challenges. For the region, this development promises new jobs and strengthens the plant's role within the European market.
