Jeep Files Patent for Innovative Removable Roof Design
Jeep's new patent reveals a honeycomb-structured roof that promises lighter weight, greater durability, and easier removal for Wrangler and Gladiator owners.
Jeep has patented a new removable roof design that could simplify life for Wrangler and Gladiator owners. Currently, the hard top is one of the most inconvenient parts of these models: the rear section is typically difficult for one person to remove.
Stellantis's patent describes a three-layer panel. Between the inner and outer layers, a honeycomb structure made of lightweight aluminum or polypropylene is proposed. The exterior could be a thin composite of fiberglass and polypropylene.

According to the engineers, this roof should be lighter than the current SMC molded composite design. The patent also mentions greater strength, durability, and the possibility to add insulation inside the honeycomb layer. This could reduce wind noise and help the heating and air conditioning system.
Drawings show a roof divided into multiple sections. The more sections there are, the more likely owners can remove panels without assistance. However, the patent does not confirm production readiness. Such applications are often filed to protect ideas. For the 2026 model year, the Wrangler retains its open-body focus, but the new roof remains just a development.
