Toyota Kirloskar Motor voluntarily completed certification before its deadline, becoming the first automaker in India to comply with the new WLTP standard. The Lexus LM 350h was certified roughly a year before WLTP requirements for M1 and M2 vehicles take effect in India. Those categories include passenger cars, commercial passenger buses, and vans with a gross weight of up to 5 tons. The standard is set to come into force on April 1, 2027. WLTP is a standardized international method for measuring fuel consumption, energy use, and exhaust emissions. Developed by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), it is already used in markets such as Europe, Japan, and South Korea. WLTP replaces older testing procedures like the Modified Indian Driving Cycle (MIDC), which has been criticized for producing results that didn't accurately reflect real driving conditions. Compared with older systems, WLTP uses a more dynamic test cycle and factors in variables like optional equipment, weight, and aerodynamics.
