Chery is strengthening its position in Europe with its most ambitious move in recent years: the launch of the Lepas brand, marking the Chinese conglomerate's first entry into the premium segment. The debut model will be the large hybrid SUV Lepas L8, a vehicle that targets the Audi Q5 in both size and positioning, making it a direct competitor to one of Europe's most influential D-segment crossovers. Based on the published specifications, the Chinese newcomer appears to be approaching this challenge with confidence.

The L8's dimensions are comparable to its German rivals, with a length of 4,688 mm, a wheelbase of 2,800 mm, and a 507-liter trunk. Its exterior design clearly draws inspiration from European styling cues, featuring slim upper sections of the headlights, vertical light blocks, and a large radiator grille reminiscent of the latest Q3 and Q5 generations. However, the interior is the main focus. A minimalist cabin, two screens (10.2 and 13.2 inches), a central panel tilted in the style of the Mercedes GLC, and high-quality materials are intended to convince buyers that Lepas is aiming for genuine premium status.

The technical aspects are equally compelling. Under the hood, there's a 1.5-liter TGDI turbo engine producing 140 horsepower, paired with an electric motor delivering 204 horsepower. The combined system output reaches 279 horsepower, channeled to the front wheels. An 18.3 kWh LFP battery provides up to 107 km of electric range, while the total driving range reaches an impressive 1,300 km—a figure that no direct European competitor can currently match.

Chery plans to introduce the model to the European market in the first half of 2026, with initial deliveries expected by late summer. The price remains intriguing, but the company hints at a range around €40,000, a level that positions the Lepas L8 as a potential disruptor in the segment. If Chery can convince fans of German SUVs to switch to this new premium PHEV, it would mark one of the most significant victories for the Chinese automotive industry in Europe.
