Why Tesla is staying out of electric motorcycles
Elon Musk says Tesla won't build electric motorcycles due to safety risks and Autopilot concerns, as Zero and LiveWire lead the growing EV motorcycle market.
Elon Musk has once again confirmed that Tesla will not build electric motorcycles. He said on social media that road-going bikes cannot be made safe enough, adding that he nearly lost his life in his youth when his motorcycle collided with a truck.
Musk explained that the issue is not Tesla’s technology but the risk built into the concept itself. He also pointed out that dirt bikes are comparatively safer because they don’t share the road with heavy vehicles.
Tesla’s Autopilot has faced criticism over incidents involving motorcyclists: according to experts, recognition systems can mistake a motorcycle’s narrow rear lights for a distant car. That misread has led to several crashes with serious consequences and has become another argument for staying out of the motorcycle business. Against that backdrop, Tesla’s caution sounds pragmatic.
Meanwhile, the electric motorcycle market is expanding without Tesla. Zero and LiveWire are increasing sales, BMW and Kawasaki are launching series-production models, and Asian brands are filling the market with affordable urban scooters. The segment is gathering pace—just not with Musk in the saddle.
