BMW just found a way to make its longest X1 cheaper than the short one — and it's the only trick like it in the whole lineup. The stretched X1 Long Wheelbase has launched in India at ₹49.90 lakh, undercutting the standard petrol X1 by a full ₹1 lakh, which costs ₹50.90 lakh. Production is localised at BMW Group's Chennai plant, and bookings opened on August 21 — exactly as the official release had promised.
The X1 LWB measures 4616×1845×1627mm, with the wheelbase stretched to 2800mm — 108mm more than the regular X1. And nearly all of that extra length went where it matters most: BMW claims an additional 150mm of rear legroom and 109mm more knee room, while the rear seat cushion grew 15mm longer. The seatbacks now recline too. The rear bench isn't a side effect here — it's the whole point, and that logic sits behind BMW's entire long-wheelbase strategy across Asia.
Under the hood is the familiar 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, good for 156hp and 230Nm. There's no choice to make on drivetrain: front-wheel drive only. The equipment list is solid regardless — Adaptive LED headlights, automatic high beam, a panoramic sunroof, digital key, a full suite of driver-assistance systems, and the M Sport package as standard. Indian outlets have also pointed to a boot that opens up to 1700 litres with the seats folded.
“The BMW X1 has redefined success in the premium SUV segment in India, consistently delivering the perfect blend of dynamics, versatility and a premium ownership experience. With the new BMW X1 Long Wheelbase, we've taken that winning formula even further. Today's customers want a car that meets both practical needs and emotional expectations, and the new X1 LWB does exactly that. It offers best-in-class space and comfort, cutting-edge digital innovation, and the unmistakable driving pleasure that only BMW can deliver,” said Hardeep Singh Brar, President and CEO of BMW Group India.
There's also a finance angle worth noting. BMW Smart Finance offers an EMI starting from ₹44,444 a month, along with a guaranteed residual value of 60% after four years. Standard warranty runs two years with unlimited mileage, matched by two years of round-the-clock roadside assistance; service packages can be extended up to 10 years or 1 million km.
All of this, worth remembering, is Indian pricing only — before local taxes and registration charges. There's no official launch of the X1 LWB planned for other markets, and the right-hand-drive Indian spec alone doesn't make it an obvious grey-import candidate elsewhere.
